So you want to become an actor/actress? Welcome to the amazing world of theatre, acting, creativity and so much more. It’s a great place to be. But where do you start? The industry can be extremely overwhelming for everyone, but especially for someone just starting off. Follow these tips to build up your currency as an actor and begin your career.

Take a class

No matter how old you are, an acting class is a great way to start. You will learn the basics, have an amazing mentor and surround yourself with like-minded people. This is a great way to build up your skills and grow your network. Learning how to act is an important step in becoming an actor.

Go to college

While taking acting classes are great, if you have the opportunity to go to college for acting, take it! There is no better place to build up a network, work with amazing and talented people, and be mentored by some of the best in the business. Being part of an acting program at college is a priceless experience that will only help you in the long run.

Act, act again, and act some more

Any chance you get to act, take it! Maybe it’s in a formal production, a commercial, movie, or tv show. Or it can be in something that you and your friends are making. Go audition for your local community theater. No matter what medium it’s in or how well, or little, known the production will be, just keep acting. Build up your resume, refine your skills, get your name out there and just practice. How can you call yourself an actor if you’re not actually acting?

Surround yourself with like-minded people

Start your own play reading group, write and film shows with your friends, or just spend some time with the people in your acting classes. Surrounding yourself with these people will help you grow as an actor. You can give each other tips and give each other the opportunity to act even if it’s just in your basement.

Audition

Go to as many auditions as possible. The majority of the time you won’t get the part. While this can be discouraging just think about the positives of going to auditions. First off, if you never audition then you’ll never get a part. The more you audition the greater your chances are of getting a part. Also, the more auditions you go to the more your name will get out there. Having the casting director recognize you is priceless.

Remember that your success is up to you

Yes, it’s also up to the casting directors whether they hire you or not but if you don’t continuously act in different productions, audition for things and just get your name known by as many people as possible then you’ll never get a part. No one is just going to find your name and call you out of the blue to offer you a part. You need to prove your worth and build your way up. Yes, you will have setbacks and not get every part you audition for. This will be discouraging. But don’t give up. Every successful actor has been in your situation before. Just keep acting and eventually things will fall into place.
